Module 2 ยท Lesson 8

COUNT and COUNTA

Count numeric records and non-empty records correctly.

COUNT answers a numeric question

Use COUNT when you need the number of numeric entries, such as recorded sales amounts or completed scores.

=COUNT(B2:B50)

COUNTA checks whether something is present

COUNTA includes text, dates, numbers, and logical values. It is useful for counting names, IDs, or records with any value.

=COUNTA(A2:A50)
  • COUNT ignores text.
  • COUNTA includes text.
  • Neither function identifies duplicate records.

Key takeaway: COUNT counts numbers; COUNTA counts any non-empty cell.
